In Mamelodi East, Grand Maghandlela paints a vibrant portrait of township life unfolding against the rolling hills of Pretoria. Rows of tightly packed homes stretch into the distance, while people bustle around a cluster of informal shops—most notably the “Sizwe Spaza Shop,” a familiar symbol of everyday survival and connection in South African communities.
The distant silhouette of cooling towers anchors the landscape, offering a visual reminder of the country’s industrial past and ongoing transformation. With bright colours, layered detail, and gentle humour, this work invites viewers into a living, breathing slice of township reality.
